Hi, I have recently stripped the paint of a car which is parked on the driveway, I have done this before at this time of year on other cars and normally rust isn't a problem as the weather is just right to prevent it.
However now it is very humid and with the moisture in the air the car is starting to rust, it is covered in plastic sheets (though the car appears to be rusting more where the plastic is tight), and a waterproof cover over that.
It will be a couple of weeks until I can finish stripping it and have it painted so any ideas on how to prevent this rust.
The rust isn't bad and is just little spots which wash straight off but obviously this is a problem, any ideas on what to do would be a great help.
Thank youLight rust forming on car after stripping paint, how to prevent?
covering the car with plastic especially when its humid out, contains the chemical reaction that causes rust. Use a cloth cover or even no cover to allow the moisture that has built up to dissipate. Paint it as soon as possible.Light rust forming on car after stripping paint, how to prevent?
You may want to go to an auto paint supply store and ask for the proper chemical to remove and neutralize the rust. There are several brands available in quart bottles that are simply wiped on and left until later. They generally contain phosphoric acid that etches the steel slightly then dries leaving a phosphate coating that resists rust and helps the new primer to adhere.
HI
first off get rid of the plastic sheet.. it holds in moisture, use something that can breath. and the quicker you can get some primer on it the better.
good luck
