Question about painting a car, primering the car yourself.?

I am stripping the paint off my 74 super beetle, sanding the surface as smooth as possible, and then primering the surface with the primer in the spray paint cans. I've always heard that if you can get the surface smooth and know kind of what your doing then you can primer a car yourself, then take it in to be painted. I'm looking for any advice or suggestions. thanksQuestion about painting a car, primering the car yourself.?
forget about the spray cans... ask yourself this--why go to all the trouble to strip all the paint off, and then skimp on the paint job. if you are going to do something half way, just prime over the paint and save yourself a lot of time. a paint job is only as good as the prime coats, so you are sacrificing the quality of the whole job just to save a few bucks on primer?????Question about painting a car, primering the car yourself.?
If you are stripping the car down to the metal, you should use an etching primer first. Etching primer has and acid in it that causes it to bite into the metal and insuring a excellent undercoating. Once that is sanded, spot in any spots you may have sanded thru, then prime with urathane primer. Using spray can primer, you may be using Laquer primer and when you apply urathan paint on top it will fry up if you are not extremely careful. Top coat with basecoat-clearcoat which is what most cars come from the factory with.
Yeah, what g2lloyd said.

Etching primer but then epoxy primer.

Great combo.
The primer in spray paint cans ain't gonna hack it. The rest of your plan is O.K. Best to use a lacquer base light gray primer. It will be compatible with most all other paints and topcoats. Use a cup - type spray gun, and a compressor. you can get a Chinese Binks knock - off spray gun pretty cheap at harbor freight or they're ilk. The body shop guys won't put paint over spray - bomb primer.
